Nothing ruins a fun day out on the water faster than a sunburn. Luckily, there are several things you can do to keep yourself and others safe. Use these tips from the experts at Northwest Inboards in order to ensure proper sun protection.

1. Wear a Hat

Your head and the back of your neck tend to be particularly vulnerable to sun damage, so it’s usually best to wear a hat when you go boating. We recommend a long-billed ball cap or a wide-brimmed nylon hat, though the style really isn’t that important. Feel free to wear whatever you like as long as it provides sufficient protection.

2. Get a Pair of Sunglasses

Prolonged exposure to UV light can damage your eyes. When it comes to picking out sunglasses, prioritize protection. If you tend to experience a lot of glare while out boating, look for polarized lenses.

3. Wear Long Sleeves & Pants

While short sleeves are usually considered the standard summer attire, they do not provide much in the way of sun protection. When boating, choose clothes that are loose-fitting, lightweight, and pale in color. These kinds of clothes will keep you cool even with long sleeves.

4. Sunscreen

When purchasing sunscreen, make sure that the SPF is at least 30. Anything less will not provide enough protection. Since you’ll be boating, you should also make sure that your sunscreen is waterproof. Don’t forget to regularly reapply the sunscreen over the course of the day to ensure proper protection.
